As of June 1, 2024,The American National Standard For Safety Of Corded Window Covering Products went into effect. This regulation requires the majority window treatments sold in the US to have cordless mechanisms or have cords that work with special safety devices. It is an important effort toward phasing out corded window treatments that are a strangulation danger to small children.
A New Window Cover Safety Standard
The Window Covering Manufacturers Association and American National Standards Institute issued the new safety requirement for window treatment products. ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 is a voluntary precaution that gives new requirements for window treatments that “reduce the possibility of injury, including strangulation, to young children from the bead chain, cord, or any type of flexible loop.”
Starting on June 1, 2024, window covers sold in the United States must meet this new safety standard. The majority of products will convert to cordless options. Treatments that have a continuous loop must include a compliant tension device that keeps the loop from becoming a strangulation threat. These rules will significantly reduce the possibility of window treatment cord injuries and deaths among toddlers.
